Back StoryTwo years ago, the Mexican Army carried out a widely successful operation to destroy major Cartel assets but also severely damaged the legitimate pieces of infrastructure they had seized control of. In the wake of this operation, repairs to critical provincial utilities have been slow or left completely undone. After the military was drawn down and replaced by Federal Police, tensions only flared hotter as a return to corrupt practices was quick to set in. Soon rumors began to fly that not only had the Los Culos Sucios Cartel not been cleared out successfully, they’ve begun to reform their operations in the deep parts of the nearby National Forest.Three months ago, prominent Mexican journalist, Alejandro Vasquez, broke a major story that accused the military of carrying out at least one extrajudicial killing of a young man alleged to be a Cartel member during their operation. Supported by leaked video of the execution, tensions exploded with mass civil unrest and an open return to Cartel violence province-wide that has lingered ever since. Two weeks ago, the Cartel came fully out into the open when they carried out a series of drone attacks on, not only Mexican forces, but also the nearby American border causing numerous military and civilian casualties. In response both nations' Presidents have agreed to American intervention in the Harris province with Task Force Serpent looking to put the resurgent Cartel out of business for good.
